The Trinidad and Tobago Men’s Hockey Team got their 2022 Pan American Cup started against the United States on Thursday and gave the Americans a fantastic battle but were unable to secure the win, eventually ending up on the wrong side of a 4-3 defeat.
The Yanks drew first blood but T&T responded 3 minutes when Tariq Marcano, leading a counterattack, made a slick pass to Jordan Vieira and using some fancy stick-work to negotiate through the defenders in the penalty circle and scored with a clever chip over the goalie’s stick.
America would strike back but momentum would shift back to the Trinbagonians. They caught a break when they were given a penalty shot and Tariq Marcano was able to convert.
Shortly after, T&T would take the lead again when Tarell Singh regained possession for T&T in enemy territory. He finds Joel Daniel deep in the penalty circle and he had enough space to readjust to score the goal that would put T&T up 3-2 at that point.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Mens’ team is ranked 37th in the world and the USA were ranked 24th coming into the tournament so in all it was a very good performance by Trinidad and Tobago punching a bit above their weight class.
The men’s team’s next game is agains 33rd ranked Mexico on Saturday and that looks to be an exciting match and the opportunity to get a win under their belt for this tournament. The Women’s team would be looking to bounce back from a rough 16-0 loss against the USA on Wednesday when they play Peru today at 2 pm. T&T women’s team finished 2nd to Peru in the Pan Am Challenge Final so this is potential to be a great game.
