Trinidad and Tobago once again had to produce some late game magic as they held their opponents Paraguay to a 2-2 draw at the 2021 Women’s Pan American Challenge in Peru.
After a stalemate in the first half, TTO got on the score sheet first with a goal from Brittney Hingh (#10). Restarting play from the sideline, Teresa Lezama drives in a surgical pass to Hingh just inside the penalty circle. Hingh manages to get good positioning and gets her shot off just under the diving goalie for the goal.
Paraguay would take control with back-to-back goals. With seconds left to go, TTO set up just above the 25 yard line with a free hit. Shaniah De Freitas (#7) tees it up and delivers a line-drive toward goal. Zene Henry (#14) manages to get her stick on to it while in the penalty circle, which deflects it upward and into the goal for the late game equalizer. Officials had to review the shot to ensure that the goal came off Henry’s stick in the penalty circle because goals only count from shots within the penalty circle. The call eventually stood and TTO got their goal.
Trinidad and Tobago’s next fixture will be against Brazil on Wednesday (tomorrow) 12pm local time.
